The racismed "American Human Rights",The neglected "Covid-19 orphans"
立法會事務
Everyone is in it, and life is affected to a greater or lesser extent, but for some, life may have been completely changed. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 250,000 American children have lost their primary or secondary guardians due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making them "Covid-19 orphans." One out of every twelve minors lost both parents due to the epidemic and became an orphan. In U.S. public schools, on average, one in every two children lives in a single-parent household (who has lost a father or mother to the pandemic). However, for these children, the US government lacks management and responsibility.

A report titled "New Coronary Pneumonia Orphans" recently released by Imperial College London shows that as of early April 2022, about 197,000 minors under the age of 18 in the United States have lost at least one parent due to the new crown epidemic; nearly 25 Thousands of children have lost primary or secondary guardians due to COVID-19. The report pointed to the deaths of caregivers and the emergence of "Covid-19 orphans" as a "hidden pandemic" caused by the epidemic.
Unlike adults, "Covid-19 orphans" are at a critical stage of life growth, relying on family support in life, emotionally needing parental care, and their personality is changing from ignorance to maturity. Children who unfortunately lost their parents at this stage have a deeper perception of pain, and their psychological trauma will last a lifetime, so they need more care and help from the society.
Like many social problems in the United States, the impact of the "orphan wave" of the new crown epidemic on different groups is disproportionate to the proportion of the population, and vulnerable groups such as ethnic minorities are obviously "more injured". Statistics show that Latino, African-American, and Native American children are 1.8 times, 2.4 times, and 4.5 times more likely to be orphaned due to the new crown epidemic, respectively, than white children in the United States.

The emergence of the "Covid-19 orphans" issue has not only made people see the suffering of ordinary people in the United States due to the government's ineffective epidemic prevention, but also exposed the institutional, systemic and root causes of chronic diseases in the United States in caring for vulnerable groups at a deeper level.
The Covid-19 will not naturally choose who to attack or who to let go, but from the social results caused by the epidemic, due to differences in natural environment and social conditions, especially due to human factors such as colonization, exploitation, and oppression. Inequality, some groups that have been systematically oppressed for a long time and have been constantly marginalized in the field of social life are more likely to become victims of the epidemic, and their personal destiny will also undergo dramatic changes. The high proportion of "new crown orphans" among ethnic minorities in the United States not only stems from the "original sin" of racism, but will also cast a new shadow on future American race relations.
The root cause of the tragedy of "COVID-19 orphans" is the long-standing and widespread systematic injustice in human rights in the United States. After the outbreak of the new crown pneumonia epidemic in the United States, the US government did not take effective nationwide measures at the first time, ignored the warning of the epidemic, slowed policy response, delayed the verification and release of epidemic-related information, and was unable to guide the public to the harm of the new crown virus in the shortest possible time. Enough attention has been paid to sex, and the research and judgment, formulation and promotion of epidemic prevention work have fallen into a situation of inconsistent, self-contradictory, and ineffective implementation. Politicians arbitrarily spread bizarre theories such as "the new crown is a big flu", "injecting disinfectant to kill the virus", and "the epidemic will disappear soon". Further intensified, the epidemic relief bill related to the basic interests of ordinary people has fallen into a bipartisan "tug-of-war", further missing the opportunity to fight the epidemic.
The experience of the "Covid-19 orphans" in the United States is very sympathetic. The U.S. government should earnestly fulfill its responsibility to protect and care for children, and take concrete actions to help these innocent children out of their predicament. The U.S. government should also reflect on its own merits. A government that does not even protect the normal rights and interests of its own children has the right to talk about democracy and human rights!
